Raft race and malevolent trees

Rating
Tuesday, February 21 2017

1. A win-or-die kind of race in bamboo rafting. Except instead of rafting in a lake or river, I race down a steeply tilted semi-circular concrete drain at a breakneck speed, balancing sideways on a single golden stem and holding another one for balance. The diameter of the drain is only very slightly bigger than my ‘raft’ and am wary of getting my toes shredded.   2. A hillside in a forest. There is not much vegetation under the trees, apart from some white daffod

Lost in translation; also cars and ballet

1. A black car is sliding sideways on parallel ziplines; it’s attached by the wheels, upside down. I am guiding it along with one hand and, although I can barely reach it, it slides easily. It’s a sunny summer say and we’re in a quiet town, but as I keep most of my attention on the car, I don’t notice much else. A green car is in my way, but I march right over its bonnet. For a moment I see myself from the point of view of the green car’s owner who has heard the

Art gallery streets

1. Hometown near my old primary school, cloudy summer day. I’m on a ski lift 20 feet up, slowly moving westwards, with a clowder of cats in the street below me. I look in amusement as they jump to get me, knowing that it is impossible, when a gray cat almost reaches me. When he fails, a ginger-and-white cat takes his place and actually touches my foot, but I shake him off. 2. I board a train after some demon hunting. There are still wisps of smoke around me from the heat of hell and

Flooded hotel

Rating
Tuesday, February 14 2017

It’s night, most of the land is flooded. The black raging sea and distant mountains are visible for a moment when the lightning strikes. There is a hotel on what used to be the beach, but now only top few storeys are out of the water. I had been cowering on the roof for a while with someone else’s newborn baby and an unfamiliar man named Al. The baby is crying and we decide to get back into the building to find food and somewhere dry to sleep as the water doesn’t seem to be

Runaway bride

Rating
Monday, February 13 2017

The whole dream was a Danny Boyle’s movie or rather the story that inspired it. It started with a wedding. I saw ‘myself’ in a mirror – a young, short, fragile-looking blonde quite like Kirsten Dunst, surrounded by friends, getting dressed for the ceremony. I wore a pink lace chemise and a very tight simple white silk wedding dress over it. Instead of the veil I had a white hat with pink flowers. I went to sit next to my fiancé at a long table in a rather dark

Bloodsoaked

  1. I lived in a crammed room with my mother and brother. Our ages were off – I was 19 and he was 10. The room was light and clean, but stuffed to the ceiling with various objects, leaving just a narrow U-shaped path. My corner behind the wardrobe was mostly filled with books and boxes. I sat there with my laptop, studying Finnish. I knew I had a girlfriend in the dream and mother was happy that I pose no competition for the affections of potential step-fathers. My brother got a w

To Purgatory and back

Summer, Hometown. I was visiting Maria where she was keeping goats off the Uni street; the room looked like the basement nightclub where I used to work. We were having some brightly coloured drinks and discussing whether to go on holiday to Spain or Scotland with our families. Our plans were disrupted when my classmate (unfamiliar) was murdered. I attended her funeral and, seeing that it’s held in the Catholic church, felt extremely frustrated that no one kne

Snowy sadness

Rating
Friday, February 10 2017

Dozens of young children of about 6 or 7 were building gravestones out of snow for their dead parents. A man in a black suit and tie was walking about, inspecting their work. The cemetery was a flat, wide field with neat rows of barely visible mounds under the snow, and the gravestones were all square and uniform. Although there were lots of people, the snow remained undisturbed. I viewed this as a disembodied presence. Right in front of me was a cute little girl with black hair, dressed

The undead

1. A long dream about Methos faking his death again and again, but leaving a clue every time for me to find. The last time seemed hopeless; I knew that there was a clue in a painting, but nothing else. I was in a big room with amber-coloured walls and there were paintings everywhere, both framed and unframed, hanging on the walls and propped against them, and stacks of unframed sketches covering every surface. I called my friends for help. Maria brought a watercolour painting of purple m

The name day of baby Jesus

Rating
Tuesday, February 7 2017

1. I’m attending a work meeting in what looks like the biology classroom in my old school – a multi-level room with worn, scratched desks. The coordinator gives a small bouquet of flowers to every Catholic in the room, saying “Happy name day of baby Jesus!”. When she gets to me, she spreads all the remaining flowers all over my desk. There are forget-me-nots, tiny pink roses and white tulips. I don’t have the heart to tell her that I don’t go to church any
