The cart before the horse (Big O)

5. Hometown, early autumn. I’m walking around the town centre feeling happy and playful. I’m wearing the long black coat that I made when I was 19. Actually, I feel distinctly 19. I notice Ricardo at quite a distance and make up a game in my mind where I’ll run into him as if by accident, pretend not to know him and make his acquaintance again. It turns into quite a chase down the whole length of the High street. I run, laughing and cannot tell whether he has noticed me and

Two witches' servant chased by storm

Rating
Wednesday, March 8 2017

3. I volunteer to be a witch’s servant. She sends me on errands in Hometown and every time her enemies chase me with a storm cloud that I have to escape jumping over the fences and hiding in shadowy gateways.   Then I have to wash her black-and-red skirt which is immense – the hem is at least 50 yards long and there are dozens if not hundreds of tiny pockets along the hem that I have to check and empty before washing. They contain among other things a brown painted Easter

Detained on the border

Rating
Friday, March 3 2017

1. I had gone from Hometown to Belarus on foot. This mostly involved climbing sandy hills overgrown with spring flowers, although at one point I walked through a dimly lit airport and stopped to talk to some Polish guys, telling them that Manchester is a beautiful city, but Colchester is even more so, trying to make use of about a dozen words I know of Polish. On the way back, I got detained at the border. I had a radio in a hip holster and used it to call the border patrol officer of a

Art gallery streets

1. Hometown near my old primary school, cloudy summer day. I’m on a ski lift 20 feet up, slowly moving westwards, with a clowder of cats in the street below me. I look in amusement as they jump to get me, knowing that it is impossible, when a gray cat almost reaches me. When he fails, a ginger-and-white cat takes his place and actually touches my foot, but I shake him off. 2. I board a train after some demon hunting. There are still wisps of smoke around me from the heat of hell and

To Purgatory and back

Rating
Saturday, February 11 2017

Summer, Hometown. I was visiting Maria where she was keeping goats off the Uni street; the room looked like the basement nightclub where I used to work. We were having some brightly coloured drinks and discussing whether to go on holiday to Spain or Scotland with our families. Our plans were disrupted when my classmate (unfamiliar) was murdered. I attended her funeral and, seeing that it’s held in the Catholic church, felt extremely frustrated that no one kne

Water-tower band

Rating
Sunday, February 5 2017

I was in a band with two guys and two girls, all unfamiliar. We lived and rehearsed in a water-tower that stood by a dirt road in the middle of a strawberry field. There were some cypress trees around the tower. Inside it was dusty and dark, with tiny little windows and exposed black wooden rafters. The trapdoor to the top floor was so narrow that I thought that either me or the taller guy who was the lead singer would get stuck there, but it was fine, we squeezed through. The tower belonged

Kiddo lost in Hometown

Rating
Wednesday, February 1 2017

I had to go on a quest with Max and Ivy, but at the moment the dream started we were sitting down on the curb at the north end of the prison bridge, trying to figure out how to get going on the flooded path. We knew we had to find someone pure of heart and the water will recede. A strongman walked by with his less strong looking friend and the water went down a bit, but not enough for us to pass. They stayed to see what will happen. Paul brought Kiddo and water receded with a wave, leavin

The abandoned cat

Rating
Saturday, January 21 2017

I found a stray ginger cat near the Chemists' House. There was an archive inside and I looked up a card that said that it's Peter's cat. I also found his ex-girlfriend who confirmed this, but said she didn't want to keep it. So I sat on the bench outside the Chemists' House holding the cat, thinking that it had been 15 years since Peter died and that the cat had been alone and neglected for so long; it made me sad. The cat was obviously old, hungry, half-blind a

Trees and tricky trade

Rating
Tuesday, January 10 2017

I'm walking in the forest near the Hometown and hear my father's voice telling me about the trees, but not actual facts, more like a tree horoscope. I listen and think that it's a load of rubbish as he describes pine as "short, silver-blonde people who are very vulnerable and should be protected". As I pass under an acacia tree in bloom, I recognise myself in his description, although I don't remember what it was. Then I cross the place where the cemetery i

Seamstress and cancer patients

Rating
Monday, December 26 2016

I was having a complete new wardrobe made by a seamstress in Hometown, near Alley street. All the clothes were made of black or dark blue velvet, except for one lace tunic. I couldn't find a hat I liked as all the models that the milliner showed me were extremely weird, like squashed and dented oversized baseball caps. On the way back from the seamstress I saw about a dozen people lying down near the Central Hospital. It had recently been raining and they were sleeping fi
