Alex. The Summer Show

Rating

6. I had been tricked into going into a dark labyrinthine building to watch a performance called The Summer Show. Admission price was one spoon that I had taken from gran’s kitchen. The show was captivating, although it mostly involved following a choir along the dark corridors; the music they sang sounded like Corvus Corax – men’s voices accompanied by distant drums. All the singers had their heads wrapped in black fabric, but they seemed to know where to go without lookin

Volcano vacation

Rating
Saturday, April 15 2017

I’m on holiday in Italy near a volcano, for one week. On the first two days, several terror acts happen. There had been a film festival and Shailene Woodley got killed. In my hotel room I watch Emma Watson and Kristen Stewart on television, expressing their condolences. On the third day I go swimming in the ocean. On the way back I take a stroll through sunlit gardens on the steep hillside and marvel how quiet it is now that all the tourists have run off. The day after I explore the ru

3. Gran’s house, but distorted. I am getting ready to sleep on an extensible armchair and am looking for someplace to hide a handful of gemstones, probably amber. I hide them in a cup of lentils and put the cup under my pillow. I sleep, it is cold. In the morning my gran wakes me up saying: “Happy Princess day!”, and gives me a hollow chocolate egg, big as a rugby ball. It has numbers 10 and 20 stamped all over it. I get the cup from under my pillow and hear a message in my

  1. London, sunny early autumn day. The Millennium Bridge is lengthways in Thames and I am taking a stroll along it with my fiancé – an unfamiliar bodybuilder in a bowler hat. He doesn’t have a shirt on and I give him a hug to keep him warm, although he says he’s not cold. I joke that with him dressing like that we’d have to have a circus themed wedding. I don’t like how he looks in the dream, but I recognise and feel intense love towards his persona

Castle Hill

    2. Me and Kiddo were in what first looked like a church (only saw inside) – huge halls, high vaulted ceilings, lots of candles, white roses and silver ornaments. There was a statue of Virgin Mary and I was surprised when Kiddo crossed herself in front of it. She said she’d been taught that in school. However, the building turned out to be a castle with a café where tourists could have a cup of coffee in the genuine 18th century atmosphere. We did to

Detained on the border

Rating
Friday, March 3 2017

1. I had gone from Hometown to Belarus on foot. This mostly involved climbing sandy hills overgrown with spring flowers, although at one point I walked through a dimly lit airport and stopped to talk to some Polish guys, telling them that Manchester is a beautiful city, but Colchester is even more so, trying to make use of about a dozen words I know of Polish. On the way back, I got detained at the border. I had a radio in a hip holster and used it to call the border patrol officer of a

  1. I work in a surreal sort of plant as a knitter, one among many. The rest aren’t happy with their work conditions and go on a strike; however, I take pride in my work and sit high atop a tangle of silver steel pipes outside, knitting with green wool while the others are shouting and protesting on the lawn below. The pipes are cold, although the day is sunny and it is summer.     2. An unfamiliar young woman has a bullet hole in her coccyx. I am her friend and

1. A photoshoot in a light studio with high ceiling. I’m dressed in a white regency dress and long gloves, and am held by a tall person in black morphsuit and cloak. The photographer (an unfamiliar young girl) explains that she’s going to photoshop it to look like Mary Shelley is embracing her shadow. In the dream it makes sense.   2. There are aliens aboard Destiny. The dream never shows them, but Eli records their voices through the wall and plays the recording for Chloe

Garden party, tribunal and bookstore

1. I lived in an unfamiliar nondescript flat and had neighbours Florence and Florian who were barricading my door with rubbish bags, practically building a wall out of them. I tricked them into removing the bags, although the details of this are fuzzy. I got out and went for a walk in a garden with my mother. It was late summer evening and the garden was exquisite – with small ponds, flowers and trees strung with string lights. Mother told me that she had cooked a piece of honey soap,

Lost in translation; also cars and ballet

1. A black car is sliding sideways on parallel ziplines; it’s attached by the wheels, upside down. I am guiding it along with one hand and, although I can barely reach it, it slides easily. It’s a sunny summer say and we’re in a quiet town, but as I keep most of my attention on the car, I don’t notice much else. A green car is in my way, but I march right over its bonnet. For a moment I see myself from the point of view of the green car’s owner who has heard the
