Kissing the Serpent

I have not been able to remember my dreams for quite some time. This began not too long after one of the women with whom I work was murdered in her home during the course of a robbery gone wrong. The Chinese city I live in is a little lawless and robbery is common. No one has guns, though, so murder is still rare and shocking. After this event I fell into a depression that lasted for several weeks. The following is the first dream I have had since my friend's murder that I can remember

Monday, November 29 2004

I am on a street in a city unknown to me. I am dressed in white. The day is bright and clear. I am feeling free and easy and at peace with the world. There is a skip in my walk as I amble down the street and the skip begins to grow into a hop. The hopping turns to leaping and soon I can pogo along the sidewalk. I am unsurprised by this development and enjoy it. I leap over cars, people and streetside cafes as though they shrank beneath my feet. Soon I am bounding over buildings

The Secret Cave

Monday, November 15 2004

I am sitting in the bedroom that I used to have back when I was growing up in Southeast Alaska. One by one, people that I used to know in High School and Junior High drop by to visit. They do not seem to have aged. They are gossiping about other kids at school, but I have trouble paying attention because I'm not a child anymore. Only one girl has changed at all. She has grown up and is no longer the gawky, awkward, chubby teen she had once been. This girl had been in a number of

Monday, November 15 2004

I am back in my bedroom in the old family house in Southeast Alaska. I refuse to leave my bed. I have no desire to go anywhere or do anything. My younger brother comes periodically to my room to see me. Curiously, I am an adult, but he appears to be frozen at the age of seven. He urges me to go outside and play in the forest that we used to use as our own personal playground. I try to explain that I am older now, and playing in the forest doesn't make much sense for a man of my a

Hemingway never died

Sunday, November 14 2004

My father and I go to a bookstore on a late Autumn evening. The featured guest and speaker that night is Mister Ernest Hemingway. We arrive, toting copies of his latest novel. It seems that Mr. Hemingway never committed suicide at all. In fact, he renounced his earlier, faux-macho style of writing, abandoned his failed novel, "The Garden of Eden," and instead began to write in a new and far less terse way. Everyone was quite refreshed when he dropped his habit of chaining predicat

I am on a mountain climbing expedition with my new employer. We appear to be high up in the mountains of Xin Jiang province, in the Northwest of China. He begins by showing me the special clothing we will need to wear. The clothes appear to be typical khaki hiking togs, but upon closer inspection they prove to me made of uncommonly durable material. Also, they are outfitted with many curious loops, straps, and pockets, presumably to accomodate different sorts of specialized equip

Trapped in a 1920's Period Piece

Thursday, October 7 2004

I am one of about a half dozen murder suspects involved in a mystery. The mystery takes place at a large old-fashioned mansion done in a turn of the century Shanghai style. The interiors are decorated with dark stained rosewood furniture, porcelain vases, scroll paintings and calligraphy. The surrounding countryside appears to be that of Southern China. None of the murder suspects in the house are ethnically Chinese, however. We are all dressed in period clothing from the 1920's.

I am in a grassy field, standing in a circle with a group of blandly dressed surburbanites of all ages. We are in a park, perhaps, or a graveyard. They are a prayer group, led by a mousy-haired woman, who appears to be a priest or minister. She asks each of us in turn to pray aloud for three things. When it come to my turn, I (for reasons I cannot fathom) choose to feign a slight Eastern European accent. My three prayers are: 1) for the health and wellbeing of my family

A Portrait of Vice, A Poem for a Peasant

Tuesday, October 5 2004

I am in Portland, Oregon, USA, down by the river, near my old neighborhood on Belmont Street. I am in the apartment of my friend, E, (an apartment I have never seen in waking life), with a middle- aged woman with strawberry-colored hair. The woman is E's literary agent. She is attempting to convince him to speak to a potential publisher about his latest comic book graphic novel. E is sullen and uncooperative, though clearly also desperate for a publishing deal. As they argue, I

American Japanese Teacher in English Class; Lesson: Humility

Monday, October 4 2004

I am in high school going to a class taught by my old Japanese language instructor, who is a Caucasian American woman. Now, she is teaching English, and the topic of discussion is comics. Virtually no one else in the room reads them, so I am seized by the desire to monopolize the discussion and show off my knowledge of the subject. The first thing I want to talk about is Evan Dorkin's work. When I am called upon, however, all knowledge of his comics disappears from my mind, wit
