Cricket

Thursday, September 1 2016

I'm in the living room of my parents' former house, playing a game like cricket but which like baseball uses a strike zone instead of a wicket.  I'm at bat and the bowler throws one wide, as it seems to me, so I don't swing at it.  But the umpire calls it a strike.   I complain and then ask the bowler if he can throw one right at the edge of the strike zone so that I can learn its boundaries. But he says he can't.

Montana biking

I'm bicycling across country on a mountain bike with fat tires.  I'm chugging my way up a slope in Montana with a nice mountain range in the background.  Finally I get to the top and head down the opposite side of the slope.  As I'm about halfway down I remember I forgot something absolutely crucial.  With a heavy heart I turn around and struggle back to the top.  I notice the front tire is getting low on air and that there is a little bit of ice on the

I'm living in a condo and talking to one of my neighbors about television programs.  They are recommending a particular series and say "The late Fr. so-and-so has it on DVD.  You should go down to his place and borrow it."  So I go down to his condo, which is in the same building.  The door is open so I walk in.  It's very elegantly appointed and spotlessly clean.  Lots of marble.  I walk through the living room into the bedroom.  On a bo

You're a poet and I didn't even know it

Sunday, July 31 2016

I'm sitting in a classroom with a handful of other adults, our desks arranged in a circle.  It's some sort of continuing education class about American literature.  The instructor is talking about an important early twentieth century poet who had served in WWI then worked for an insurance company.  Losing that job, he was on an assembly line before taking the leap of faith and trying to make it as a poet.  "And," the instructor said, "we have the privil

Shrink in training sprays Brits

I've decided to enter a Ph.D. program in psychology.  For some reason, as part of this I sled down a snow covered, hilly street in London England.  There's a line of people on the sidewalk waiting for something, and I swerve towards the side of the road and splash them with slush.  Far from being annoyed, they love it.

While in bed I get an alert on my phone from the litter box that the cats have a GI virus (it detects this by weighing the poop).  I get up and clean out the diarrhea from the litter box.  There's also a silver cake stand which is encrusted with the litter-poop mix.  I go to the sink to rinse it off with steaming hot water.  A drop of water splashes on my lips and I wipe it off while wondering if humans can catch feline GI virus.

Dream 1: I'm standing on a long strip of concrete crossing beneath a tall steel bridge spanning a bay.  I'm teaching library research to a group of students clinging to the side of a medium sized boat (maybe a ferry).  The cold, choppy water swells and pushes the boat toward me.  I run away. Dream 2: I've just arrived in Japan with my parents, although we're standing in a dry creek bed next to a culvert in the woods--it looks like the American South where I grew

My old college friend's 1967 Chevelle is parked at a gas station.  The hood is open and I'm looking at the engine.  H.L., a coworker from my previous job, is in the driver's seat with the door open.  "Open up the throttle" she says.  I pull a small lever near the engine to make it rev up.  H.L. then applies the gas to make the engine go even faster.  I see a spinning fan of some sort start to rub up against a hose and abrade it.   Then

Mr. Takahashi is visiting from Japan.  For some reason the word "matrix" comes up in conversation and he wants to know where the word came from.  I said, "That's called an 'etymology' and a lot of dictionaries have them."  We first try looking it up on his smartphone but the only result we get is from Yahoo Maps.  I point to an encyclopedic dictionary on a bookshelf and say "It should be in there."  He picks a volume and flips th

I felt something on my wrist.  I looked down and a large pinkish bug was clasped to my arm.  I flung it to the floor and swatted it with a slipper.  Instead of going splat, it broke apart into mechanical pieces, kind of like Legos.
