Badmouthing my boss at work

Rating
Saturday, April 23 2016

I was at work early to work on features pages. I finished a section but screwed up. I had edited a car article, and there was some kind of artpiece in a tire. The text on the tire was black. When someone looked over it, they said text in tires are supposed to be any color but black. They asked if whoever edited this had gotten the note. I was embarrassed because I saw the note but didn't believe it made sense in this instance. The text on the tire was the name of the tire brand, Goodyear.

Not ready at work

Rating
Thursday, April 14 2016

I was at work, but the layout of the office was different. We didn't have the tall cubicle walls; instead they were shorter. I felt like my computer was facing a different direction. I had just finished reading a story and writing a headline. I marked it "ready." The designer came up to me and said it wasn't ready. I said I didn't know what happened. The headline didn't fill the count, and the story was too long. I went back into it to fix it.

Beginning editing class

Rating
Tuesday, March 15 2016

I was taking an editing course taught by Bill Walsh. I don't know why I was taking it because I have had a career for 10 years. In the class were students who had never edited before or only were starting. They had a lot of questions. This class was like a lab with tables. We left and entered a classroom in my middle school. This class had desks. Bill was giving the preliminaries of editing. He said, "What do you do if you don't know something?" No one said anything. Bill an

Job interview, strange elevator, small tortoise

Rating
Tuesday, January 19 2016

I was in Washington, D.C. for a job interview with Politico. I was inside a building on the north end of the National Mall. I looked out the windows and saw the mall to the right. I was talking with a manager in his large office. We weren't talking about work. We talked about the city. He pointed out his window to a crowd of people coming up stairs from underground. He said that's where a Metro station was and that a train must have just arrived. We talked about the job and what it en

My headline is changed

Rating
Thursday, October 15 2015

I was at work. I was working on an article and wrote a headline on it. I wasn't too happy with it, but I felt like it was good enough. Deadline was approaching, and I learned that things don't have to be perfect anymore. After it was finished, I went back and looked at the article. There was a better headline on it. I was a little upset with myself for not coming up with that one or something similar.

Editing news and sports

Rating
Monday, June 22 2015

I was editing a newspaper in North Carolina. I was a slot editor. I had finished the news sections and was helping sports.    An editor I follow on Twitter, R.L., was going to come in and help. He showed up while I was busy, so we only got to nod at each other. This was our first time meeting. He sat at a computer on the other side of the room.    When I finished what I was doing, I walked toward him. He got up and rolled over a cubicle wall. I found him lying on

Strangers are laid off at work

Rating
Sunday, June 23 2013

I entered the office at work and saw that lots of people were moving desks. There were a lot of empty desks because some copy editors for other newspapers had been laid off. Two people laid off were from The Baltimore Sun and The Washington Post. They worked in our office, and I remembered enjoying their company. My actual co-workers were rearranging the empty desks and their desks to make the place not seem as empty. It made me feel sad.

Angry at Gary

Rating
Saturday, November 24 2012

I was at work and picked up a story to edit. It was a small story with two briefs. There was a headline box and the box below it was for the credit. Instead of saying "American-Statesman staff" or "wire reports," it said something like "American-Statesman is just a shill for a bunch of stuff no one cares about." That made me angry. I deleted the offending words and yelled at Gary, who put it on there. I said you don't put things in the paper that shouldn't be there. I said every journalist know

Editing what's been edited

Rating
Wednesday, October 24 2012

I was sitting at a computer to edit an article. I don't remember what it was about, except it mentioned Toys R Us and its parent company. The parent company was something I'd never heard of before, so I looked it up on the Internet. I discovered that the name in the article was misspelled, so I changed it. When I got to the end of the article, I opened up the notes and saw that Merrill Perlman had edited it. It called her a famous Canadian editor. I didn't know she was Canadian, but I knew she

Marking pages at work

Rating
Thursday, October 4 2012

I was at work. We were nearing the end of the day, and I was proofing pages. I was handed a back page and checked the text against the budget. The page had an odd layout. It was all text, and there were no columns. It just spread across the entire width of the newspaper. There were six or seven items, which were separated with lines. There was slightly larger text above each section, which I suppose was the headline. Then there was smaller text below it, though that text was larger than the nor
