Stay Safe

The movement of running up stairs is a familiar one, and my first memory of this dream exercises this familiarity, as I find myself racing up the empty downward-moving escalator in to avoid the traffic of its upward-moving counterpart in a London tube station. When I get to the top I pivot and turn to go the other way on ground level. I enter a room to my right. It’s a bedroom - not mine, a girl’s. I don’t know who she is. She needs to leave – to catch a flight. She needs

Intuitively, I weave my way past tourists and locals who are walking the opposite direction along a narrow alley that is almost steep enough to require steps. I persist in walking up the hill determinedly. The aromas of restaurants change as I advance further up the hill. The cobbles on the road and the architecture suggest Eastern Europe. I ride shotgun in a clapped out yellow pick-up. Vast fields flank the straight, undulating country road. Despite the obvious lack of suspension in the old vehicle and the uneven road surface, I feel at ease and safe. The driver is Fred. He gazes straight ahead out of the windscreen with an expression of complete content, his narrow eyes made narrower by the afternoon sun overhead. In the distance is a forked junction. At a high speed, we travel on one of the forks, approaching a single exit. Acr

The dream seemingly begins in an elevator, like so many of my lucid dreams. This time I don’t check the five fingers on my hand or try to press through my left palm with the fingertips of my right hand – both physical indicators I use to check if I’m dreaming. The lift doors slide open to reveal a metallic platform, around two metres wide, stretching out endlessly into a dark fog. My Dad and I walk tentatively along it for a while until it comes to an end. The fog subsides, ri
