Water Under The Arch

Saturday, February 13 2010

Goodness, this is hopelessly vague. It's from yesterday, I think, and I took notes on it, but I guess the memory didn't register properly because I barely remember even what I wrote down! I noted it because it was about Mackinac Island. Here are the notes I took, sans abbreviations: 2 plans to do something on island, money cutbacks?, 1 including cutting off walking access over "dam" (near British Landing Road), mention of former (summer? winter?) rite of drawing kids up? to certain area in sleds

The Building Of Arch Rock

Thursday, June 5 2008

Yesterday I went to Fort Michilimackinac and bought a huge book called A Picturesque Situation: Mackinac Before Photography, 1615-1860 by Brian Leigh Dunnigan; it has all sorts of weird old maps and sketches of Mackinac Island and the Straits region. And then I had a Mackinac Island dream! :D So here we go. In the dream, I believe I was in my bedroom looking at this book. As I browsed the pictures I came to an old sketch of Arch Rock. It amused me at first because the artist's rendering was so i

Landmarks Unknown

Saturday, January 1 2005

Just a very vague snippet. All I know is I was looking at a book or something and it had these really old woodcuts and paintings and such of different natural Mackinac Island landmarks, like Arch Rock and such; they were all black and white or in sepia tones. Since they were so old some of the landmarks still in existence looked very weird because of the artist's rendition of them. I recall an arch and/or rock formation of some kind that I do not think was Arch Rock, and some of them had weird

The Island Waits For No One

Friday, December 17 2004

A Mackinac Island dream! :) But a rather irritating one. >:/ I cannot remember the beginning, but my memory picks up with me traveling with a group of other people, being led around by a woman tour guide. We were near Arch Rock only the scenery was WAY different. In real life Arch Rock is right above the shore, projecting from the East Bluff; but in my dream, it was inland somewhat, with a lot of grassy open area in front of it, like a field; and piney woods behind it. Arch Rock itself look

The Ballad Of Arch Rock

Thursday, November 25 2004

Ma and I were watching, on TV, some sort of old film that had been shot on or was about Mackinac Island. It was fictional. At some point this male narrator or something began to sing a song about Arch Rock, a natural formation on the island, and it was remarkably cheesy. Just this stupid old-fashioned (Forties or Fifties) song about the rock. O_o A slow song in a Bing Crosby-type voice. I watched the film while listening to this, wondering if they would actually SHOW Arch Rock. They finally di

In Search Of The Fairy Arch

Tuesday, September 21 2004

In real life, there was once a natural rock formation on Mackinac Island called the Fairy Arch. I have reason to believe it has collapsed, because the most recent pictures I was able to find of it were from the late 1800s; it was apparently along the shore, and as there is nothing like that along the shore, and it's not listed in the guidebooks anymore, it must have fallen long ago. :( Until finding an etching of it that depicted it on the shore a little earlier this summer, I had thought perhap
